Dear Residents of Highland Hills:

I write to introduce myself to you. I am your newest councilwoman, Reverend Leah Lewis. On August 1, 2013, I was unanimously selected to fill the seat vacated by former Councilwoman Patricia DeBerry. I am thrilled to serve you—my neighbors in the Village of Highland Hills.

Before I proceed, I wish to thank outgoing Councilman David Scott. As you may know by now, Councilman Scott invoked my name in his September 20th retirement letter to the community. While I have only been on the Council a short time, it has been a distinct pleasure to learn from my colleagues on Council including Councilman Scott and Councilwomen Barbara Spearman, Jean Abernathy-Smith and Lillian Moore. Additionally, former Councilwoman DeBerry and retired Councilman Sam Smith have served as dialogue partners getting me up to speed on Council affairs. Our wonderful Clerk of Council, Jeune Drayton has been a joy to work with.

At present, I am resident of the Shaker House and have been for 26 months. As a native Clevelander I have admired Highland Hills for some time. Ours is a community that is perfectly located, safe, clean, peaceful and poised for even greater productivity and stability in the years ahead. I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve you and to contribute to a bright future for our community. As an aside, even though housing stock is hard to come by due to the great nature of our Village, I look forward to buying a home here.

In the days ahead you will have an opportunity to learn much more about me. You will come to know my extensive educational background, professional experience, and commitment to service and to community. In short, I am a gradate of Howard University School of Law and Yale Divinity School. Additionally, I have a wealth of experience in community engagement, social justice, and the law. Once my story is told, you will come to know one of my hallmarks: dedication to excellence, particularly, in my work, my ministry, and the quality of my professional and personal interactions.

I also expect that there will be many occasions for us to connect face-to-face. I invite you to attend any of our Council meetings when your schedule allows. Your participation is key to greater civic engagement and can stimulate even more positive changes in our Village. Until we meet face-to-face…

Sincerely,

Councilwoman Leah Lewis
